  • Hereditary and Congenital Disorders - There are 7 conditions that have a 12 month waiting period: luxating patellas, portosystemic shunts, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans and cardiovascular defects. The waiting periods for these conditions can be reduced to only 14 days if a veterinary exam confirms the pet does not have these health conditions. The exam must be performed up to 10 days prior to enrollment or no later than 30 days after enrollment. Vet fills out Pet Health Checklist and 12 month waiting period is waived.
  • Waiting period for cruciate ligament injuries is 6 months

  4. EssentialWellness - Economic routine care coverage can be added for an additional premium and helps pay for routine care with no deductible to meet.

* Orthopedic Conditions: Seven conditions are subject to a 12-month waiting period, which will be waived if your pet is examined by a veterinarian and determined to be in good health within 30 days of enrollment. The conditions are: Cruciate Ligament Injuries, Luxating Patellas, Portosystemic Shunts, Elbow Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia, Osteochondritis Dissecans and Cardiovascular Defects. Cruciate ligament injuries subject to 6 month waiting period.

Chronic Conditions considered a single incident and cruciate ligament injuries are not considered bilateral conditions (this is good).


Wellness Coverage

Pets Best offers one comprehensive wellness plan for both dogs and cats. Wellness plans can be added to most plans for help paying for routine care like spay/neuter, vaccinations, bloodwork, and heartworm preventive.

Wellness can be used for wellness and routine care expenses at any licensed veterinarian and can be added to any Pets Best insurance policy. There is a 14-day waiting period and no deductible. It's important to note that there are specific annual limits by treatment type.

Accident Only Plan

The Accident Only plan covers the treatment of accidents including exams, X-rays, surgeries, hospitalization and medications. The Accident Only plan stays largely the same, but the only deductible / reimbursement option is $250 / 90%. It will be a flat rate of $9 for dogs and $6 for cats regardless of age and breed.

Policy Exclusions


  • Pre-Existing Conditions - An illness or the recurrence of any illness or condition which first occurred or displayed any signs and/or symptoms consistent with the stated illness or condition prior to the policy effective date; or an injury or recurrence of an injury that occurred prior to the policy effective date; or any condition or complication resulting from an illness or injury that occurred prior to the policy effective date. A condition may be considered Pre-existing: whether or not it was specifically diagnosed by a veterinarian, whether or not it was treated by a veterinarian, is in remission at the time of application, is seasonal in nature even if in remission at the time of application, is currently or previously being controlled by medication(s), or is a latent infectious or parasitic condition that manifests itself within a known incubation period following the policy effective date rendering clear evidence that the condition had to be contracted prior to the policy effective date... In other words any health problems before you enroll will not be covered.
  • Routine Care - Vaccinations and routine annual exams, blood work, spay, neuter, and routine diagnostics, except as provided by the Wellness Benefit if purchased.
  • Preventative and Elective Procedures - Including, but not limited to: tail docking; ear crops; nail trims; declaws; dewclaw removal; elective gastropexy; and anal gland expression and removal. Claims for Pets that are found to be healthy and presenting with no clinical symptoms are also excluded.
  • Breeding and reproduction expenses
  • Herbal, Holistic or Experimental Therapies - Alternative therapies and medications, chiropractic care, acupuncture, cold laser therapy, physical therapy and hydrotherapy are not considered alternative therapies and are covered.
  • Some Prescription Drugs if not included in our list of covered medications
