Ductus Arteriosus in Dogs

Small dog getting tested with a stethoscope

Ductus Arteriosus is a congenital condition in the heart wherein a neonate's ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth. Early symptoms are uncommon, but in the first year of life include increased work of breathing and poor weight gain.

With age, the PDA may lead to congestive heart failure if left uncorrected. The disease occurs more frequently in females than in males (also known as Patent Ductus Arteriosus).

Treatment can be surgical or non-surgical depending on the several factors including severity, age, etc. Patent ductus arteriosis (PDA) is the most common congenital heart disease in dogs.

Cost to Treat: $2,500 to $5,000

Ongoing meds will cost $30 to $100 per month for the remainder of your dog's life.
