Dwarfism in Dogs

Overview

Dwarfism occurs when a dog is lacking the right amount of a growth hormone. This condition is inherited and common in certain breeds such as the German Shepherd. Dwarfism may not be noticed at birth, but when a canine doesn’t grow as large as his peers by age three to four months a dog owner may become concerned. Your puppy will need weekly growth hormones to assist in his development.

Related Condition: Achondroplasia

Treatment

Additional medication may be needed if the dog appears to have a thyroid issue.
