Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis in Dogs
Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis (GME) is also known as Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE). GME is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. There are three types of GME:
- Local – limited to one location in the nervous system
- Disseminated – involves many locations in the nervous system
- Ophthalmic – involving the optic nerve in the eye
A dog may suffer from more than one type of GME. The disseminated form is the most common. Focal GME typically has a slower onset and disseminated is more rapid.
Medications and radiation therapy can decrease symptoms but unfortunately most dogs with GME / PDE will eventually die from the disease. Medications and radiation therapy for dogs can cost thousands of dollars.
Cost to Treat: $6,000 to $7,000
