Great Danes are also referred to as German Mastiffs or Danish Hounds. Great Danes were originally used to hunt deer and wild boar and they are one of the largest dog breeds in the world. Enough with the trivia, let’s talk about your Great Dane’s health and issues to keep an eye on.

Great Dane’s are the greatest dog’s in the world. They’re big, love-able and very generous. Unfortunately Great Danes have a relatively short average lifespan of six to eight years. The biggest reasons they have such a short lifespan is because they are susceptible to several genetic conditions.

Don’t believe it Can Happen to You?

A three year-old Great Dane was in such bad shape that his owners took him to a Portland, Oregon emergency animal hospital. X-rays showed a foreign material in the dog’s stomach that required surgery. After the two hour operation the vet surgeons pulled out 43 ½ socks. Clearly this family likes colorful socks of all shapes and sizes. The good news is the Dane made full recovery. The bad news is the family is short about 22 pairs of socks and I’m sure the vet bill was in the thousands. Hopefully they had pet insurance!
