Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia in Dogs

Labrador retriever with a sad face

Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT) is a serious autoimmune disease in dogs where the body attacks its own blood platelets like a virus.

Common symptoms include lethargy, weakness, increased breathing, easily bruising, bleeding in the mouth, pale gums and bloody stools. Diagnostic testing includes blood tests, urinalysis, chest x-rays and an abdominal ultrasound.

Treatment is expensive and depends on the severity and health of your pet. Most common forms of treatment include immunosuppressive drugs, oxygen therapy, fluid therapy and blood transfusions.

Cost to Treat: $500 to $1,000 per treatment
