Liver Disease in Dogs

Overview

Liver diseases is the 5th leading cause of death in dogs.

Also referred to as hepatic disease, liver diseases range widely in severity. Some liver diseases and complications include abscess of the liver, benign tumors, cancer, toxins, parasites, hepatic encephalopathy, acute hepatic failure, hepatic lipidosis, hepatitis chronic active, copper storage disease, leptospirosis hepatitis and infectious hepatitis.

A licensed veterinarian or veterinary specialist can perform tests on your dog and determine what type of liver disease your dog is suffering from.

Treatment

Depending on the underlying cause of the disease treatment can range from a simple diet change to surgery and ongoing medication.

Cost to Treat: $2,000 to $5,000

Pet insurance helps pay for treatment for liver disease if your dog needs veterinary care. However, make sure you purchase a plan before your dog suffers from an illness because pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions.
