Molera in Dogs

Five Chihuahua dogs posing on a sidewalk

Overview

Also referred to as Open Fontanel. Molera is a soft spot or “ hole” in the skull of a Chihuahua at birth. Also known as an open fontanel and is a soft spot found on the top of the head. This soft spot is the same as that found in our human babies. The presence of a molera does not mean the dog has a medical problem.

Many uninformed people and some veterinarians not familiar with the Chihuahua breed have tried to link the presence of a molera with the condition known as hydrocephalus. The presence of a molera in a Chihuahua does not make the dog any more or less susceptible to brain injury, seizures or hydrocephalus.
