Necrotizing Meningoencephalitis in Dogs

Chihuahua dog with spike collar

Necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME) is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that occurs primarily in young, small breed dogs including pugsmaltese and chihuahuas.

Necrotizing meningoencephalitis is fatal without aggressive immunosuppressive treatment. Because NME can't be definitively diagnosed before death it is difficult to determine the prognosis of the disease.

Immunosuppressive drugs and therapies cost thousands of dollars. Pet health insurance helps pay for expensive veterinary treatment when your dog gets sick. Get a policy before your dog has a life threatening illness or accident.

Cost to Treat: $1,500 to $4,000
