Pulmonic Stenosis in Dogs

Overview

Pulmonic Stenosis, also referred to as Congenital Heart Defect, is the third most common congenital heart disease in dogs.

Pulmonic stenosis refers to a constriction of the pulmonic heart valve through which blood must pass from the heart to the lungs. Most affected dogs initially show no symptoms even though a heart murmur might be present. These types of murmurs are typically noted on routine veterinary examinations with a stethoscope.

As the disorder progresses the right side of the heart eventually fails and is unable to accommodate the blood flow. This leads to edema or fluid build-up within the abdomen and limbs.

Treatment

Treatments include medication, balloon valvuloplasty or surgery depending on the severity and health of the dog. Heart surgery for dogs is very expensive. Costs range from $15,000 to over $20,000 depending on the type of surgery and where you live.

Pet insurance will pay for up to 90% for surgery and treatment for pulmonic stenosis, but, your dog must be enrolled in a plan before showing clinical signs.
