What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Standard pet insurance policies cover accidents and illnesses. However, some pet insurance companies also offer wellness and routine care coverage for an additional charge.

Coverage Chart

Pet insurance provides coverage for unexpected health issues when your dog or cat gets injured or sick. Plans pay up to 90% of your actual, total veterinary bills.

Here is a list of health issues and treatments that are covered by pet insurance plans.

Unfortunately, pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, so it's important to enroll while your pet is healthy and young.

Coverage Options

There are hundreds of pet insurance options and plans. However, they all boil down into three major categories. Here is a list of the three levels of coverage with a little more detailed explanation of each.

1. Accident Only Plans

Accident only coverage is for all kinds of injuries, like broken bones, bite wounds, car accidents, swallowed objects and burns. These plans are less expensive than standard accident and illness policies but do not cover illnesses. We don't recommend these plans because illnesses are more likely and more expensive to treat.

2. Major Medical Plans

These are by far the most popular plans for pet owners and we consider them the standard pet insurance coverage. Accident and illness policies cover all the major health issues your pet may encounter during their lifetime. Emergency care, broken bones, cancer, surgery and long-term care for chronic conditions. We recommend standard accident and illness policies because they provide the best value of price and coverage.

3. Wellness Plans

You can add a wellness and routine care plan to a regular pet insurance policy. These plans cover expenses for annual exams, heartworm medication and dental cleanings. Wellness plans typically cost an additional $20 to $30 per year

What's Excluded?

Unfortunately no pet insurance company covers pre-existing conditions.

A pre-existing condition is any illness or injury that first occurred or showed signs prior to your policy starting. If your pet has suffered from a specific illness, injury or other health condition prior to enrollment then it will be considered a pre-existing condition and will not be covered by pet insurance.

This is why it's so important to enroll in a plan while your pet is healthy!
