Dermatomyositis in Dogs

Dermatomyositis is an inherited, hereditary disorder that can cause skin lesions. In severe cases it can negatively impact muscle functions.

Dermatomyositis primarily affects Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs although is seen occasionally in other breeds. Dog's with this disorder will have hair loss and a small lesions may appear. The lesions will have a white or yellow crust or they may appear to be an area of dry flaky skin or just a small bald spot.

Dermatomyositisalso known as Sheltie Skin Syndrome.


There is no cure for dermatomyositis but symptoms can be treated with steroids. Mild cases may clear up without treatment.
