Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs

Dog scratching himself on the neck

Atopic dermatitis is a type of skin eczema that is inflammatory. Unfortunately it is a chronic condition but is not contagious. Atopic dermatitis is the second most common skin allergy in dogs. These allergic reactions can be brought on by normally harmless substances like grass, mold, house dust mites, and other environmental allergens. Dogs normally show signs of the atopic dermatitis between three months and six years old. In most cases it does not become clinically apparent before three years old.

The signs associated with atopic dermatitis, meanwhile, consist of itching, scratching, rubbing, and licking, especially around the face, paws, and underarms. Here is a list of areas where dog's affected by atopic dermatitis may often scratch or have discomfort.

  • Ankles
  • Ears
  • Eyes
  • Forehead
  • Groin
  • Underarms
  • Toes

Treatment includes diet, medications and avoidance of allergic substances. Corticosteroids and antihistamines can also be given to control or reduce itching. Cyclosporine is effective in controlling itching associated with long-term skin allergies. Sprays can be used over large body surfaces to control itching with minimal side effects.
