More About Wellness Plans

In order to be eligible for a wellness plan you must enroll in a regular accident and illness policy. However, there is one exception. Nationwide allows pet owners to purchase their wellness plan without purchasing a standard accident and illness policy.

All other pet health insurance companies that offer wellness coverage require that you purchase their standard accident and illness policies to be eligible for wellness coverage. The good news is that there are no deductible or co-payments with wellness plan, so you can use them anytime for covered expenses.

Pet wellness plans cover routine care expenses. These are expenses that are planned and predictable each year. In order to be eligible for a wellness plan you must also have a regular accident and illness plan, which covers unexpected accidents and illnesses.

They are designed to help you manage the risk of large, unexpected vet bills. Here is an overview to help illustrate the benefits of both.

Treatments Covered by Wellness Plans

  • Annual Exams
  • Spay / Neuter
  • Teeth Cleanings
  • Blood Panels
  • Heartworm Tests
  • Fecal Tests
  • Urinalyses
  • Rabies Vaccination
  • DHLP Vaccination
  • Parvo Vaccination
  • Bordetella Vaccination
  • Lyme Vaccination
  • Giardia Vaccination
  • Flea, Tick & Heartworm

Treatments Covered by Major Medical Plans

  • Accidents
  • Illnesses
  • Hereditary Conditions
  • Orthopedic Conditions
  • Prescription Meds
  • Emergency Care

Do You Need Wellness Care?

Wellness plans are best for pet owners who regularly spend $400-500 per year on routine care for their pet. If you spend that much a wellness plan can save you money because the cost of the plan will be less than your annual routine care expenses.

However, if you don't spend that much each year on routine care a wellness plan is not a good fit. For example, if you just spend $100 per year for an annual visit and some shots, it's better to pay for routine care out of pocket.

Note about Banfield

Banfield does not offer pet insurance but they do have pet wellness plans for $33/mo. The downside is that their Optimum Wellness Plans and Banfield Puppy Plan does not cover accident or illness treatments or flea and tick medication. Additionally their plans are only accepted at Banfield Pet Hospital locations.
