Coverage Comparison

Both Petco and Trupanion offer one, simple accident and illness plan that covers unexpected injuries and illnesses. So when you compare the two there is not too much difference in coverage but there are a few subtle differences. For example,  Trupanion offers a complementary, non-clinical procedures for additional cost. Petco includes these treatments without additional cost.

Recovery and Complementary Care Rider

  • Acupuncture
  • Behavioral modification
  • Chiropractic
  • Homeopathy
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Naturopathy
  • Physical therapy
  • Rehabilitative therapy

Trupanion also offers optional coverage for things outside of the vet clinic if your pet gets lost or you have a vacation cancelled. These are health related but you might find valuable.

Pet Owner Assistance Rider

  • Advertising and reward
  • Boarding fees in the event you are hospitalized
  • Liability coverage for third-party property damage
  • Cremation or burial for deaths due to accident
  • Holiday vacation cancellation costs

Other Notes

Aside from Trupanion’s Pet Owner Assistance Rider (and assuming you add the Recovery and Complementary Care Rider) both companies offer nearly identical coverage. However, some vet clinics will accept Trupanion direct pay whereas Petco does not have that option yet. But of course that depends on if the vet clinic you visit has opted into Trupanion program.

Regardless, both plans offer excellent accident and illness coverage coupled with world-class customer service. The only thing we would recommend is to get quotes from both companies because every pet insurer prices plans different based on breed, age and zip code. So the best value for your pet might be different than your neighbor if you have different breeds.
