Learn More: Ratings Methodology

Company Ratings Overview

Dog celebrating with party hat

Picking the right plan will make you happy!

Each company's rating is based on our comprehensive ratings methodology that includes four categories and 30 attributes.

We spend every day evaluating pet health insurance companies and plans to make sure this information is trusted and accurate.

We don't hide behind an anonymous website, our team is licensed, available and we're leaders in the pet insurance space.

The 4 C's of Pet Insurance

Our pet insurance scores are broken down into four categories: coverage, cost, customer satisfaction and company.

We believe these are the most important categories you should consider when shopping for pet insurance.

And our friends at the Insurance Information Institute and NAPHIA agree. Here is a more detailed breakdown of each category.

Category #1 - Coverage

Puppy tackling a cat

In our opinion, coverage is king.

We feel strongly that coverage is the most important criteria when shopping for pet insurance.

Whether you're shopping for pet insurance, auto insurance or life insurance, coverage is what differentiates companies and policies.

Quality pet insurance policies cover any major health issues your pet may encounter during their lifetime.

Health Issues & Costs

The most common (and most expensive) health issues are orthopedic conditions, hereditary disorders, chronic conditions and emergency care.

To give you a real example of how expensive veterinary care can be we created a sample list of common pet health conditions and the average costs to treat them.

Condition Cost to Treat
Canine Cancer $5,000 to $20,000
Hip Dysplasia $4,000 to $6,000
Elbow Dysplasia $3,000 to $5,000
Cataracts $2,000 to $3,000
Foreign Body Ingestion $200 to $5,000
Progressive Retinal Atrophy $2,000 to $3,000
Aortic Stenosis $3,000 to $6,000
Von Willebrand Disease $500 to $1,000
Ichthyosis $50 to $200 per yr.
Masticatory Muscle Myositis $50 to $100 per mo.

The highest rated companies (listed above) provide complete, comprehensive coverage for these health issues without exclusions or hidden payout limits.

What Types of Plans are Available?

There are 12 companies and hundreds of plans to choose to choose from, but don't be intimidated, pet insurance isn't rocket science!

There are three different levels of coverage to choose from:

  • Accident & Illness Policy - These are by far the most popular plans. They account for over 98% of all purchases. An accident & illness policy covers everything but routine care.
  • Accident Only Policy - These plans are cheaper but only cover vet bills related to accidents. We don't recommend these plans because illnesses are more likely and more expensive to treat.
  • Wellness Care Plan - You can add a routine care or wellness plan to a regular pet insurance policy. These plans cover annual visits, spay/neuter, vaccinations, etc. We do not recommend these plans because there isn't much benefit.

Digging into the Details

Each company has different terms and conditions that you should know about. Here are the four most important characteristics to keep an eye on.

  • Annual Limit - This is one of the most important factors when choosing a plan. Make sure the policy has at least a $10,000 annual limit. This will ensure you have enough coverage for major health issues.
  • Coverage - As previously mentioned, we recommend you select an accident & illness policy. Every company offers this type of policy as the default option. They are the most popular, highest rated and provide you the most coverage and best bang for your buck.
  • Waiting Period - Every company has a waiting period, which is the time from the day you enroll to when your coverage period starts.
  • Exclusions - The higher rated companies have very few exclusions (mostly just pre-existing conditions) but not every company is created equal. That is why you want to evaluate company ratings first before selecting a plan. It's never a good idea to pick the cheapest policy, but there are ways to get the right policy and not overpay.

Category #2 - Cost

Dog made of dollar bills

Let's face it, cost always matters.

If a pet insurance plan is too expensive you're not going to buy it.

So the second most important category to consider when shopping for pet insurance is cost.

We don't suggest that you should choose the cheapest plan, but when there is an apples-to-apples comparison, we do suggest you choose the better priced plan.

That's why we created a free, custom quote system so you can compare plans and prices side-by-side.

Sample Costs

Dogs are more expensive than cats and English Bulldogs are more expensive than Mixed Breed Dogs.

The simple fact is that the more prone to health issues your pet is, the more you plan will cost.

The bottom line is that each company rates each breed differently so it's important to compare plans from multiple companies to find the best price.

Here is a sample of average costs for dogs and cats, respectively.

Adjusting the Price of a Plan

Every pet insurance company will allow you to adjust the price of your plan by choosing a custom deductible and custom reimbursement percentage.

This is nice because you can get the company and coverage you want that fits in your budget.

  • Deductible - If you choose a higher deductible you will pay less for pet insurance. Conversely, if you choose a lower deductible you will get more back when you file a claim, but your monthly rates will be higher. Deductibles range from $100 to $1,000 (we recommend $200 or $500 to maximize value).
  • Reimbursement - If you choose a lower reimbursement rate you will pay less each month for a policy because the company will pay less when you claim. And, as common sense will tell you, if you choose a higher reimbursement rate you'll pay more each month. Reimbursement rates range from 60-100% of your actual vet bills (we recommend 80% or 90% reimbursement rates to maximize value).

Category #3 - Customers

Pet Owner Survey

Where the rubber hits the road.

After you enroll it's critical for a pet insurance company to offer excellent customer service.

When your pet needs expensive veterinary treatment you need an insurance provider to be responsive and helpful.

Some companies offer full 24/7 customer service and others will leave you with a static "Contact Us" page that's not very helpful. We factor these elements into the customer service categories for each company.

Customer Reviews

We've collected thousands of pet insurance reviews from dog and cat owners.

Below are some sample testimonials to give you a better sense of the value of quality pet insurance coverage.

Category #4 - Company

The beginning of pet insurance in America

Dr. Jack Stephens, Founder of Pets Best

Brand and culture matter.

The final category that goes into a company's rating is the company itself. The longer they've been around, the better. The bigger they are, the better.

History, leadership and financial stability all matter.

Company attributes are very important, and often forgotten when looking at coverage, price and service, but it's still a major factor that truly separates the good companies from the not-so-good.
